The 60th Annual Jim Bowie Days Rodeo & Celebration will once again feature one of the crowd favorites for the youngest cowboys and cowgirls — Mutton Bustin’ — but for 2026 there will actually be TWO separate Mutton Bustin’ competitions during Jim Bowie Days week.
Because we have received several questions from parents, we want to clearly explain the difference between the two events, the dates, and how entries will work.
Youth Rodeo Mutton Bustin’
The first Mutton Bustin’ competition takes place during the Jim Bowie Days Youth Rodeo on:
- Tuesday, June 23, 2026
- Wednesday, June 24, 2026
Important Details
- Ages: 4–6 years old
- 12 contestants per night
- Mutton Bustin’ will be held BOTH nights
- Entries will be handled through the Rodeo Ready App
Entry Window
Parents may enter beginning:
- Monday, June 17, 2026 at 3:00 PM
Entries will remain open until:
- Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at 6:45 PM
JBD Rodeo Mutton Bustin’
The second Mutton Bustin’ competition will take place during the UPRA Rodeo performances on:
- Thursday, June 25, 2026
- Friday, June 26, 2026
Important Details
- Ages: 4–6 years old as of January 1, 2026
- 12 contestants per night
- Qualifying rounds will be held BOTH nights
How Entries Work
Entries for the UPRA Rodeo Mutton Bustin’ will be accepted by text message ONLY on:
- Tuesday, June 23, 2026
- Between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM

Finals Information
The Top 3 contestants from each qualifying performance will return for the short go round during the Saturday night UPRA Rodeo performance on June 27, 2026.
Safety Requirements
For BOTH Mutton Bustin’ events:
- No ropes allowed
- Contestants must bring their own helmet
- Contestants must bring their own protective vest
